According to the editorial feature, Google Arts and Culture, it is a well-known fact that the UK and fashion go hand-in-hand. Home to many notable fashion designers, the UK fashion industry contributes immensely to the UK economy. The industry also supports the country’s reputation for creative excellence and is also one of the most diverse industries in the country.
Numerous fashion shows happen in London, the nation’s capital in a year, among which are the London fashion week and Pure London, happening twice a year. These shows are aimed at showcasing the creativity of designers both International and Local. These shows receives hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly both foreigners and locals.
Unfortunately, the Medway community consisting of five cities (Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham) does not currently play host to any of these fashion shows. Fashion designers in this area go to London to get their creativity showcased and many times, the cost of showcasing in these high profiled shows discourages these designers. Medway Fashion Week aims to solve this problem.
The Medway community is blessed with huge Arts and Cultural resources and we believe that it is time to shine the light on these areas especially Fashion. We know that this show will not only promote fashion and fashion designers in Medway, it will also help to develop a strong Arts and Cultural Atmosphere in the area.
The Medway Fashion week features upcoming and premium designers of different race and background in and around the Medway area on the catwalk. Other professions linked to the fashion industry are also affected, like the hair and beauty industry involving hair stylist and makeup artist which also have the opportunity to showcase their creativity while working with the stylists and models to create the perfect look for the runway. Performing artists are also featured in between catwalks.
The show mainly utilise Professionals in training for its organisation and execution. For example, students from the University of Creative Arts, Rochester and the Mid-Kent College in Gillingham currently offer fashion design, hair styling and beauty courses. These students are given the platform to get hands on experience in the real world under the supervision of an experienced professional in the field.
The very first show was hosted in Brompton Academy, Gillingham on the 22nd of February, 2020.
We had a couple of support from the Medway Council, Medway Messenger and radio Sunlight
For every show, a charity is chosen to be supported with part proceeds from sales of tickets for the show. We supported the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. This hospital receives about 619 children and young people from across the UK. Doctors and nurses battle the most complex illnesses and the brightest minds come together to achieve pioneering medical breakthroughs. This extraordinary hospital always depends on charitable support to give seriously ill children the best chance to fulfil their potential.
The Medway Fashion Week is the brain child of Eddybond International Ltd, a fashion company based in Gillingham, Medway. The founder, Eddy Eguaoje, with over 10 years of experience in the fashion industry has featured in several fashion events in the London, Scotland and in Africa. His collection 'Laaste by Edi' includes both men women's wear and upcycled outfits as well.
